Leadership Quotes

"The greatest people are self-managing – they don’t need to be managed. Once they know what to do, they’ll go figure out how to do it. What they need is a common vision. And that’s what leadership is: [h]aving a vision; being able to articulate that so the people around you can understand it; and getting a consensus on a common vision."
- Steve Jobs
This quote is from Steve Jobs and touches on parts of leadership that we have learned in this course.
It is important to control your employees and ensure they are doing their jobs properly. However, being overly controlling can reduce your employee's productivity and satisfaction with the work they are doing. Managers should instead control the broad directions of their employees, but leave the smaller details up to them. This helps to ensure employees feel satifaction in the work they do, while also ensuring they stay on task and motivated.
It takes as much energy to wish as it does to plan.
- Eleanor Roosevelt
This quote is from Eleanor Roosevelt. While it's short, it has a lot of meaning. During this course, we learned about planning and keeping organized, and this quote effectively shows why we need to plan in our daily lives.
Planning out our daly activities is important because planning things out often leads to greater success in our goals. This quote says that planning takes the same amount of energy as wishing; in other words, rather than wishing for what we want to happen, we should plan for what we want to happen.
If you have an important point to make, don't try to be subtle or clever. Use a pile driver. Hit the point once. Then come back and hit it again. Then hit it a third time - a tremendous whack.
- Winston Churchill
This quote is from Winston Churchill and connects to the concepts we learning in this course about Communication.
As this quote says, effective communication is about getting your point across with the minimum amount of confusion possible. In this course, we learned that communication is made up of steps, and one of the is noise. Noise can be present from many sources but your message can be communicated despite noise only if you are to-the-point and direct, and that's exactly what Winston Churchill is telling us to do.
